Hot on the heels of the release of the overhauled version of its iPhone app, AT&T Interactive’s online yellow pages website YP.com has now just finished doing the same for the version of the app meant for mobile devices running the Android OS. The app can be downloaded from the Android Market and comes pre-loaded on all AT&T Android smartphones and devices such as Motorola’s ATRIX and HTC’s Inspire. The main modifications to the app include a revised visual style, increased customization features, and deals, which are pretty much the same changes done to the iPhone iteration.

The head honchos at AT&T noted that there were a few differences in the way iPhone users and Android users used the app. In general, they observed that users of the Android version of the app were likely to do the following:

Search for establishments distributed over a wider geographical area outside of major cities

Search for the same categories as iPhone users, with restaurants, pizza and Chinese food being the top 3 searched categories.

Have a significantly lower chance of searching for a night club or beauty salon

Search for a bank or gas station

While no major conclusions can be drawn from this data given the relatively small sample size, it does suggest the existence of some key demographic differences between Android and iPhone users. Preliminary studies of other known data seem to point to this conclusion as well.

Android powered devices are owned by a wider spectrum of the population, fueled by the existence of several Android handsets that are significantly cheaper than iPhones, with some even being sold by pre-paid carriers. This has led to some quiet rumbles within Apple about perhaps releasing a less expensive version of the iPhone in the future.

AT&T Interactive’s YP.com has become just the second website after Bing to integrate the interior imagery system from EveryScape. This feature allows users to enjoy a virtual tour of the interior of a shop or store or restaurant of their choice.

Jim Schoonmaker, CEO of EveryScape, has indicated that similar deals are in the works for the future, emphasizing the synergies between the company’s deals with both YP.com and Bing. AT&T currently provides Bing with local advertising.

EveryScape CEO Jim Schoonmaker told me that more of these deals were coming but highlighted the “synergies” between his deals with Bing and YP.com. AT&T provides local advertising to Bing.
When asked how Everyscape’s system differs from a company made video tour, Schoonmaker stated that videos tended to feel like sales pitches that tended to put off consumers, while “webscapes” like those employed by EveryScape’s system gave them the power to explore a location on their own.

Additionally, Schoonmaker stated that virtual tours made a consumer more likely to buy from a featured business. The press release backed this assertion up with numbers, saying that 87% of consumers that explored a business via EveryScape ended up having a positive affinity for the featured establishment, with 70% of those consumers stating that they were more likely to visit the location in person.

Google has been spotted trying to get in on this trend by collecting interior photos of local businesses. Also, Mok Oh, founder of EveryScape, has recently been named by WHERE.com as “Chief Innovation Officer”.
